Buena Park topped University 15-7 on their homecoming to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Omicron League. The Coyotes amassed 347 yards from scrimmage and overcame three turnovers and 155 yards on 14 penalties while stopping University twice in the Red Zone in the second half, including once with a minute left in the game.
Buena Park went on a 65-yard scoring drive in the second quarter culminating in a Lynnden Hodge two-yard run for a 7-0 lead. Late in the first half the Trojans tied the score on an 11-play, 95-yard scoring drive ending in a fourth down, 25-yard pass from Dylan Elmer to Carl Oldham. Oldham finished with 7 catches for 107 yards while Elmer passed for 158 yards 14 completions in 27 attempts.
Late in the third quarter, University was stopped on a fourth and one at the 12-yard line. The Coyotes responded with a two-play, 88-yard scoring drive cashing in with a 31-yard pass from Kevin Garcia to Hodge. Hodge ran the ball 16 times for 180 yards. Hodge and Nicholas Zamora each had four catches for 70 yards while Garcia passed for 160 yards.
The Trojans had 85 hard-earned yards on the ground. Damari Carter carried the ball 22 times for 71 yards for University who fell to 3-4 and 0-2 in league. Borna Sharafkhanian ran seven times for 17 yards.
Jake Rabold had three receptions for 26 yards, Lucca Clouthier caught three passes for 19 yards and Jack Jordan had one for six yards.
Uni actually won the turnover battle with The Coyotes coughing the ball up on fumbles twice and throwing an interception once. Uni had two giveaways, both interceptions. The de facto turnover battle was even at three apiece as the Trojans failed to cover a pooch kick early in the second quarter.
Uni was guilty of eight penalties for 40 yards. The Trojans had more first downs (15) than BP (14). Uni had five rushing, seven passing and three on penalty while the Coyotes had nine rushing and five passing.
Uni converted 6 of 15 third downs and 3 of 6 fourth downs. BP was 1-3 on third down and 0-1 on 4th down.
On defense Oldham had five tackles and two pass breakups. Luke Emrich also had five tackles, including one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Cruz McMullens had four tackles and a leaping interception. Carter had three tackles, including one for loss and a forced fumble. Marco Pablo Tirado, Kevin Jin, Adham Osman and Geoff Soriano each had a pair of tackles. Clouthier had a pass break up and a fumble recovery. Michael Gasper recovered the other fumble. Sharafkhanian had a tackle for loss.
Jake Rabold had his 44-yard field goal attempt hit the left post, but did add an extra point, punted once for 39 yards and averaged 57 yards on two kickoffs, including one touchback.
Uni controlled the ball for almost 31 minutes while BP had the pigskin for just over 17 minutes. Total plays favored Uni 63-40.
